One thing is safe to say…
We would all love a more vibrant downtown Arlington. There is just something awesome about being able to head to a city’s core and have the option to live, work, eat or play.
When it comes to what makes a city’s core great, the first paragraph in Livability’s Top 10 Best Downtowns article says what we all would probably agree with:
The best downtowns foster creativity, inclusion and innovation. They showcase what is good about a community by offering a diverse array of local architecture, art, lifestyles and things to do. Great downtowns unite residents from all walks of life, even those in the suburbs, by providing places to connect. Above all, the top-performing downtowns must maintain a high level of energy and give all residents in a city a reason to come on down.
In case you didn’t read the entire article, Fort Worth ranked #1.
Arlington’s downtown does have some existing gems like Levitt Pavilion, Twisted Root Burger Co., Arlington Music Hall and J. Gilligans (just to name a few). Most Arlington residents would agree that more can be done to improve our city’s center.
If you haven’t heard, the Downtown Arlington Management Corporation, has initiated a campaign called myAbram. The goal is to make downtown Arlington more of a destination instead of a passthrough by redeveloping Abram Street.
To no surprise, our community’s responses were both passionate and diverse. Here are a few of the most popular ideas from our community (by # of comment likes):
Get rid of all of the car dealerships and dive bars. – Ryan B.
More restaurants and shops — (like) Main Street in Grapevine. – Bekki N.
Make it more walkable and appealing to the eye of both pedestrians and drivers going by. – Jan M.
Make Abrams and Division smoother roads. – Angela P.
Public Transportation – Michele S.
We DESPERATELY need a place to go after a movie or dinner late at night, where we can sit (and) talk…that’s NOT a bar!!! We are in such a coffeehouse deficit, it is unreal. Starbucks does NOT count…and they close at 10pm. We need good sitting places bad!! – Aleisha U.
We encourage you to take a look at all of the nearly 50 Facebook responses. Sure, nobody’s gonna agree 100% on what should be done to improve downtown Arlington. But we do love hearing your ideas.
