Bad for your lungs. Great for your meat.
If you love finger-licking, slow-smoked BBQ, you need to know about Jambo’s Barbeque Shack. Competition BBQ legend, famous BBQ pit maker and recent BBQ Pitmasters (tv show) winner Jamie Geer created the joint in Rendon in 2013. In 2014, Paul and Ashton Lovato purchased the restaurant and have been running it ever since.
The duo wanted a second location and looked around for a cozy shack-like building off the beaten path fitting for their que. This search led them to 2502 Little Rd (the old Jackson’s Burgers/Grill). It’s fitting Arlington was the city of choice because the couple resides in Arlington. Ashton is also a Martin High School grad.
The Jambo’s Barbeque Shack Arlington location opened on Tuesday, July 28.
Walk inside and you’ll be in carnivore heaven. Gaze at the chalkboard menu and you’ll be deciding between brisket (sliced or chopped), pulled pork, bologna, ribs and sausage (made in-house on Mondays). You can opt for a sandwich, plate, 1/2 pound or full pound order.
This isn’t a rush-it-on-and-off-the-smoker kind of place. Using pecan wood, brisket and pulled pork are slow-smoked for around 16 hours. Ribs are smoked between 3-4 hours. Their patience produces tender, juicy meat with a subtle smoked flavor.
If you’re feeling adventurous (and extremely hungry), there are a couple of menu items you’ll want to try:
- The Sadie – A giant baked potato stuffed with butter, sour cream, and cheddar cheese. Topped with chopped brisket, sausage and onions then smothered with beans. ($8)
- The Jambo Texan – Brisket, bologna, pulled pork, sausage and ribs piled between two slices of Texas Toast. ($15)
Want some company for your meat? Here are a few side items you can order:
- Potato salad
- Cole slaw
Side orders can be ordered in small, pint and quart sizes.
Any bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapenos fans in the house? You’ll be delighted to know that you can order those if you wish.
And what’s great BBQ without a tasty dessert to finish things off? You can order their homemade peach cobbler for dessert.
Take it from me. If you want to delight your taste buds with delicious BBQ, this is a place worth adding to your Arlington chow down circuit.
