It’s one of the most debated topics in Arlington. Should Arlington have a public transportation system? Some say yes. Some say no.

Regardless of your needs, here are five alternative public transportation options in Arlington.
Handitran, managed by the City of Arlington, is a public transportation service available for senior citizens ages 65 and over as well as citizens with disabilities. Cost is $2 (cash) per one-way trip. Riders can also opt for a $55 monthly pass which provides unlimited service in a calendar month. A one-time application fee of $10 is also required prior to usage.
Although not an intercity transportation option comparable to DART in Dallas or the T in Fort Worth, Metro ArlingtonXpress (MAX) was introduced in 2013 as a two-year pilot program designed for commuters. Arlington City Council later voted to extend MAX through August 2016. Metro ArlingtonXpress buses travel between the stops in Arlington to the TRE CentrePort/DFW Airport Station. From CentrePort/DFW Airport Station, riders access any DART bus or train or T bus to travel to Dallas or Fort Worth. Regular price tickets are $5. Reduced fare for qualifying riders cost $2.50.

Uber is a rideshare/referral service that connects riders with drivers using the Uber smartphone app. The app connects riders with drivers using their phone’s location/GPS. Riders pay through the app thus eliminating the need for paying the driver directly.

Lyft operates essentially like Uber. The Lyft smartphone app will connect you with local drivers.
